We all know carbon dioxide (CO2) is a natural component of the air around us. However, new research is showing that when we sit indoors for extended periods of time, in environments containing many people, the resulting levels of CO2 can significantly reduce the performance of our brains. In a recent study, scientists looked at brain functioning in environments with varying levels of CO2. They found that in environments with higher levels of CO2, such as schools or enclosed offices and meeting rooms, the brain’s decision making capabilities became impaired, and in some cases significantly so. So, if you’re having difficulty problem solving or making decisions, open a window or take a walk outdoors! Perhaps even consider a walking meeting outside with colleagues.
